The Unmet Need

More students need support from Washington State Opportunity Scholarship (WSOS), and we must be ready to provide it now and in the years to come.

Through all cohorts, WSOS has selected an average of 63% of eligible Baccalaureate Scholarship (BaS) applicants and 61% of eligible Career & Technical Scholarship (CTS) applicants. For our most recent BaS cohort 2025, we were only able to select 57% because we received so many applications.

This means that there are highly qualified students interested in pursuing credentials in the fields our state needs most. “More than a quarter of a million adults with a high school diploma or less are at risk of being left out of the job market”, reports the Washington Roundtable 2024 report “Skill Up For Our Future”.

We must act now to support the next generation of students. By 2030, we aim to significantly increase the number of Opportunity Scholars earning higher-education credentials that give them entry into Washington’s high-demand jobs.
