Today, businesses across the state of Washington are eager to hire people in STEM, trade, and health care jobs. But, we have a critical shortage of skilled workers in these high-demand fields.
At the same time, thousands of young people across our state are motivated and capable of pursuing higher education and are eager to enter these fields. However, they have been excluded from the financial resources and support systems needed to complete their education and move into these jobs.
We do not have enough Washingtonians with the education, skills, and training to fill the jobs that power our economy.
In the next decade, most jobs in our state – especially those paying a living wage – will require a postsecondary education. If we are to continue to thrive as a hub of innovation and economic growth, we must act now to ensure the next generation of Washington students is prepared for the jobs of tomorrow.
