National Geographic Society & The Nature Conservancy Community Conservation, Data Visualization, and Mapping Externship

How to Apply:

The National Geographic Society + The Nature Conservancy are bringing together the next generation of conservation mappers and data storytellers.

This 8-week remote Externship gives youth ages 18–25 the chance to explore pressing conservation challenges and translate real environmental data into community impact using industry-standard GIS tools.

You’ll work alongside experts from the National Geographic Society and The Nature Conservancy while building data visualization, mapping, and science communication skills.

Here’s what participants will do:
✅ Explore conservation topics like biodiversity loss, marine issues, and freshwater threats
✅ Get hands-on training with Esri GIS and mapping tools
✅ Conduct location-based data research in your own community
✅ Build a portfolio-ready Esri StoryMap showcasing your research and data visualizations

Along the way, you’ll develop GIS fundamentals, research methods, data storytelling skills, and cross-sector collaboration experience, all through a flexible 10 hours/week remote program.

Students who complete the program also receive a $500 stipend.
