You'll work alongside experts from the National Geographic Society and The Nature Conservancy while building data visualization, mapping, and science communication skills.

Here's what participants will do:

✅ Conduct location-based data research in your own community
✅ Build a portfolio-ready Esri StoryMap showcasing your research and data visualizations

Along the way, you'll develop GIS fundamentals, research methods, data storytelling skills, and cross-sector collaboration experience, all through a flexible 10 hours/week remote program.

Students who complete the program also receive a $500 stipend.

Description:

Reporting to a manager or supervisor position in the Public Works Department, under close supervision, the intern position will perform basic or general tasks in support of a Public Works section. This position is designed to provide recent high school graduates, current college students or recent college graduates (within the last 12 months) an opportunity to learn about local government and gain valuable work experience toward their chosen career path goal(s). The intern will assist the Transportation section in performing traffic studies including traffic counts and turning movement counts. With nearly 345 miles of roadway lanes; 3,800 streetlights and traffic signals; 525 miles of water, sewer and stormwater lines; 250 acres of maintained parks and facilities; 125,000 square feet of occupied buildings; a fleet of 240 vehicles; and numerous volunteer programs, Public Works is the largest and most diverse department within Lacey's municipal organization. 

Working hours are generally between 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. but will also include a.m. and p.m. peak data collection.  Schedule will be flexible based on the student's class schedule, however Mondays and Fridays are key days for placing and retrieving traffic counting equipment.  Number of hours per week to be determined.  Work will be limited to 16 hours per week during school attendance, and 40 hours per week June through August.

The intern position in Public Works typically works less than five (5) months in a full-time schedule during a calendar year, and the rest of the months the hours of work are limited to less than 70 per month. The position is hourly and is not eligible for retirement or medical benefits.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

These duties include but are not limited to the following

  • Performs basic filing duties in support of assigned team. 
  • Perform tasks in support of assigned individual projects, which includes use of Microsoft Suite products (e.g. MS Word, Outlook and Excel), ArcGIS Pro, and/or AutoCAD.  

Transportation Section

  • Assists with performing traffic studies including traffic counts and turning movement counts.  
  • Field verification of intersection diagrams, traffic collision analysis, delay studies, speed studies.
  • CAD work using AutoCAD.
  • Uses Microsoft Excel, Access, and MSWord for various projects.
  • General filing and other miscellaneous work and projects as assigned.

Other Duties Assigned

  • Performs other duties as assigned including work in other functional areas to cover for absences. 

QUALIFICATIONS

Area(s)  of study:

Must be a current Civil Engineering-CAD Technology student or a student in a closely related program.  Currently enrolled in a post-secondary educational program related to Civil Engineering, environmental science, or related field 

OR A recent graduate (within the last 12 months) with an Associates/Bachelor/OR Master's degree in Civil Engineering, environmental science or closely related field.

Island County’s Environmental Health Division is seeking a motivated and detail-oriented intern to conduct a comprehensive Wastewater Proviso Literature and Policy Review. Building upon the 2025 Biohabitats Island Region Innovative Solutions Report, this project aims to develop the technical and regulatory framework necessary to approve alternative, nitrogen-reducing wastewater treatment technologies.

The findings from this internship will directly inform local efforts to advance wastewater solutions that support affordable housing solutions while protecting ground and surface water from nitrates in Island County.

Duration: Hire Date – December 31, 2026
Hours: 20 hours per week, with total hours not to exceed 520 paid hours.
Compensation: $25.00 per hour
Location: Remote with in-person meetings and site visits available

Job Duties

  • The intern will focus on a blend of literature review, data analysis, policy comparison, and stakeholder engagement:
  • Technology & Literature Review: Evaluate approved public domain and proprietary nitrogen-reducing wastewater technologies in Washington State, as well as unapproved public domain systems (e.g., carbon-fed systems, passive inground biofilters, constructed wetlands) that could benefit the region through product development and registration.
  • Capacity & Performance Evaluation: Analyze treatment capabilities (CBOD5 – mg/L, TSS – mg/L, fecal coliform, E.coli) and suitability for COSS design flows between 1,000 and 3,500 gallons per day. Identify performance envelopes (pH, temperature, flow, NSF/ANSI status) and maintenance costs.
  • Policy & Regulatory Analysis: Conduct a policy analysis comparing Washington State Department of Health (DOH) regulations with a representative sample of 10–15 other U.S. state health departments regarding alternative treatment system approvals.
  • Local Code Review: Evaluate local Island County health jurisdiction regulations to identify code revision opportunities that support COSS implementation.
  • Industry Survey: Design and execute an anonymous industry survey with local stakeholders (designers, installers, maintenance service providers) to assess real-world installation, operational, and lifespan costs.
  • Feasibility Assessment: Evaluate the suitability of using the Island County wastewater treatment facility as a test cell for testing new denitrification systems and technologies.

Key Deliverables:

  • A detailed, comprehensive final report of findings.
  • A list of recommended local health jurisdiction regulatory revisions to support COSS.
  • A cost-analysis summary comparing public domain vs. proprietary nitrogen-reducing technologies.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Background in Environmental Health, Environmental Science, Public Health, Civil/Environmental Engineering, Public Policy, or a related field.
  • Strong research skills with experience reviewing administrative codes, technical publications, and scientific literature.

The salary range for this position is $80,000 - $90,000 salary. Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to education, work experience, certifications, etc.

The Maintenance Planner and Scheduler will be responsible for managing workflows through the Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS) for the Maintenance and Facilities team. This individual should have clear communication skills, knowledge of maintenance and building systems, workflow processes, and strong technology skills.

 What You'll Do:

  • Follows company policies, procedures, work instructions, documented systems, and regulatory requirements; including but not limited to all safety, health and environmental regulations and requirements.
  • Creates work orders.  This includes prioritizing work requests and workloads, determines resources; specifies, and ensures tasks are completed in a timely fashion. Balances scheduled work orders with labor availability and skills.
  • Develops Preventative Maintenance (PM) plans and determines PM frequency based on equipment manufacturer recommended maintenance, maintenance intervals and historic recorded CMMS data.
  • Reviews, assigns, and closes out completed work orders and PM’s.  Escalates work order and PM backlogs. 
  • Manages inventory levels and spare parts to ensure availability.
  • Supports other staff with effectively and efficiently using the CMMS, identifies and facilitates improvements to CMMS performance, and utilizes analysis and reporting tools to validate CMMS functionality.
  • Receives feedback from maintenance and facilities team and communicates problems and improvement opportunities to Maintenance Management team.
  • Estimates and defines requirements for total labor, materials, special tools, equipment, and skill sets, for all work including complex projects such as plant shutdown, plant improvement projects, etc.
  • Collaborate with Maintenance Management team to coordinate all activities to be conducted during plant shutdowns.
  • Validates inventory levels and orders parts when necessary.
  • Coordinates maintenance needs with operations to minimize downtime.
  • Maintains and monitors a weekly work order schedule for all maintenance shifts.
  • Develops, evaluates, and implements detailed standard operating procedures.
  • Adds equipment and assets to the CMMS system.
  • Validates and corrects discrepancies in CMMS data.

What You'll Bring:

  • Minimum of 3 years maintenance/planner experience.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in a technical role in an industrial manufacturing environment.
  • 5+ years’ experience using a CMMS system (eMaint, SAP, Maximo, MP2, etc).
  • Background in maintenance and repair of equipment in order to effectively plan daily maintenance department activities.
  • Must have Microsoft Suite experience with a more than basic understanding of Microsoft Excel  
  • Must know how to create spreadsheets and work with existing Macros as this is a necessity for this job.

Key Job Responsibilities

  • Ensure consistent execution of WOW (Wow Operating Way) plan.
  • Plans the repair work that is necessary and prepares cost estimates for customers. Uses various tools such as cutting guns, plasma cutters, hydraulic jacks, hammers, and pliers to repair sections of a vehicle.
  • Hammers out dents, dimples, and other minor body damage if possible; mixes and applies filler resins to repair dents when other methods are not feasible.
  • Realigns car chassis and frames to repair structural damage.
  • Removes damaged sections of vehicles and replaces them with new or aftermarket parts. Replaces or repairs glass and windshields as needed.
  • Replaces or repairs interior parts as needed.
  • Welds and otherwise attaches or fits parts into place and Prepares and repaints vehicles with factory-specified paint or agreed-upon equivalent.
  • Attempts to complete work orders within labor time guidelines. Ensures all work has been executed correctly by inspecting vehicles after repair.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Education and/or Experience Required

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Successful completion of technical school program OR a 3-year apprenticeship as an auto body repairer.

Required Skills/Abilities

  • Ability to read job orders and work with very little supervision.
  • Ability to work with other repairers within an auto body shop.
  • Thorough understanding of methods and procedures to repair vehicle bodies.
  • Thorough understanding of how to use tools required for the trade.

Other Requirements

  • Must be able to work safely in a noisy area with many odors present.
  • Must be able to lift up to 30 pounds at times.
  • Must be able to visually inspect vehicle damage in a variety of weather conditions.

This position facilitates care coordination by using the nursing process to assess, identify, plan, implement, and evaluate all aspects of care and teaching needs via direct and telephonic/telehealth or electronic encounters. This role works in collaboration with other members of the health care team. The Clinic RN maintains compliance with professional nursing standards and regulatory requirements and supports clinicians in delivering quality health care to patients. Required Qualifications:

  • Graduate of an accredited registered nursing school
  • Associate's degree in nursing, or
  • Bachelor's degree in nursing
  • upon hire: Washington Registered Nurse License
  • upon hire: National Provider BLS - American Heart Association
  • 18 months professional nursing experience.

What you will do:

  • Responsible for commissioning, programming, setting up graphics, communications link, end to endtesting, troubleshooting and servicing on assigned projects.
  • Responsible for documenting point to point verification, sequence of operations validation and job closeout requirements.
  • Represents the company by serving as the direct customer contact and is responsible for servicing products and equipment on assigned projects, ensuring customer satisfaction by identifying, diagnosing and repairing equipment and systems at customer’s location.
  • Coordinates with team leader and customer to precisely understand requirements for all on-site installation and repairs by forecasting issues, gathering materials and synchronizing on-site work.
  • Keeps current on Trane products concerning installation, operation, maintenance, service, and repair ofdirect digital control systems.
  • Continually enforces safety to the highest standards and maintains security and accountability of company issued and procured assets by recording use, wear and conditions.
  • Displays team effort and dedication to customers by maintaining flexibility to work overtime and weeks as the business requires, including occasional overnight stays.

What you will bring:

  • A High School Diploma or equivalent required, and typically at least 3-5 years of experience in HVAC/Controls. Technical School or formal training is preferred.
  • Operating knowledge of Microsoft office software and working proficiency with hand held computer (i.e.Smartphone, iPad).
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license for a minimum of 12 months, with no major or frequent traffic violations including, but not limited to: DUI, Hit & Run, License Suspension, Reckless / Careless Driving or multiple smaller infractions or preventable collisions in the previous 3 years.
  • Previous experience with DDC controls system preferred.
