McKinstry’s commitment to the Career & Technical Scholarship

For nearly a decade, McKinstry has been a valued partner to Washington State Opportunity Scholarship (WSOS), helping expand access to education and career pathways that strengthen Washington’s workforce. Their newly announced Building Futures Initiative marks an exciting next chapter in that partnership and a meaningful investment in construction careers, building trades, and applied STEM pathways across the state.
Through the Building Futures Initiative, McKinstry has committed $1 million by 2030 to support early exposure, hands-on learning, and career-connected opportunities for students, particularly women, interested in the built environment. WSOS is proud to be among the nonprofit partners supported through this initiative, with McKinstry’s investment directly benefiting students pursuing credentials through the Career & Technical Scholarship (CTS) program in construction and building trades.
McKinstry’s commitment reflects a clear understanding of what it takes to build a strong and inclusive workforce. Their support helps Career & Technical Scholars offset tuition and training costs as they pursue industry-recognized credentials that lead to high-demand, family‑sustaining jobs in Washington. This investment closely aligns with WSOS’s mission to serve talented students furthest from opportunity by creating clear pathways from education to the state’s most critical workforce needs.
The Building Futures Initiative also builds on a longstanding relationship. McKinstry has partnered with WSOS since 2016, pairing financial investment with deep employee engagement. More than 70 McKinstry employees have volunteered with WSOS, contributing time, expertise, and mentorship to support students as they navigate education and career decisions. That combination of corporate philanthropy and employee involvement strengthens workforce development efforts statewide.
As demand continues to grow for skilled trade professionals, early and intentional employer engagement plays an essential role. McKinstry helps students envision themselves in construction and building trades careers they may not have previously considered. These efforts support individual students while also strengthening Washington’s construction workforce for the future.
WSOS is deeply grateful to McKinstry for their continued partnership, their leadership in workforce development, and their investment in Career & Technical Scholars. Their Building Futures Initiative demonstrates how employers can help expand opportunity, advance equity, and ensure Washington’s industries have the skilled talent they need to thrive — today and in the years ahead.
The Career & Technical Scholarship supports students pursuing certificates, associate degrees, and approved apprenticeships in high‑demand fields, including the trades. CTS provides up to $1,500 per quarter and helps cover tuition and essential costs like housing, transportation, food, and tools.
For students pursuing the trades, CTS helps turn career goals into real opportunities — supporting the skills and credentials needed to enter Washington’s workforce.
