From Dream to Reality: How Michael Hess is Turning His Passion into Service

For Michael Hess, the path to becoming a firefighter medic isn’t just a career goal, it’s a calling. Currently studying paramedicine at Central Washington University, Michael is determined to make a difference in his community and inspire others along the way.
“I am pursuing a degree in paramedicine. It is the biggest and most important stepping stone in reaching my goal of becoming a firefighter medic, which has been my dream the moment I learned it was something I could do someday,” Michael shared. “It’s a career where I can contribute to something bigger than myself, be part of a team that truly makes a difference, and make my family proud, as well as myself.”
That dream is steadily becoming a reality, thanks in part to the support of the Washington State Opportunity Scholarship. As an Opportunity Scholar, Michael has not only received crucial financial support but also found a community that believes in his future.
“Receiving the Opportunity Scholarship was a huge deal for me. It felt like someone truly believed in my potential and was investing in my future. I started to believe that maybe others could believe in me as much as I do,”
he said. “This scholarship has given me the motivation to work through so many challenges and maintain focus on my education even when it is hard. It has given me a deeper sense of purpose and people to make proud.”
Michael’s dedication extends beyond the classroom. He’s already completed EMT school, is actively volunteering with his local fire department, and is deeply committed to the work ahead.
“The most memorable part of the scholarship has been how it has given me the ability to fully focus on what I am here to learn,” he said. “It made it possible for me to finish EMT school in my first quarter, and gave me the time and support for volunteering with my local fire department. This scholarship has directly influenced my ability to make meaningful progress toward my career and goals.”
More than just financial support, WSOS has provided Michael with a foundation of encouragement and guidance.
“My experience with WSOS has been incredibly supportive. They have been there every step of the way, answering my questions and offering the resources I need to succeed,” he explained. “The funding they provide is not only significant in calming my financial stress but also in allowing me to prioritize my education without the burden of worrying about loans or finances.”
As Michael continues on his journey, he carries with him a sense of deep gratitude and purpose.
“It is important to me to pay it forward through my achievements, knowing that every step I take toward my degree is a reflection of the support and belief WSOS has given me, as well as everybody else who has invested in me,” he said. “I am so grateful and excited to be participating in the opportunities I’ve been allowed just by receiving this scholarship; it is fulfilling me more than anybody knows.”
