Investing in the Future: Cambia Health Foundation’s Commitment to WSOS
Cambia Health Foundation’s commitment to fostering healthier, more resilient communities can only become a reality when the backbone of our health care system is supported — the dedicated professionals who provide care when we need it most. That’s why they partner with organizations like the Washington State Opportunity Scholarship (WSOS), to accelerate equitable change for historically underserved students and increase the local talent pool of individuals who could one day enter the health care field.
Why WSOS Matters to Cambia Health Foundation

Washington State Opportunity Scholarship’s mission of “strengthening our communities by building pathways to high-demand jobs” is one that resonates deeply with Cambia Health Foundation. As Peggy Maguire, President of Cambia Health Foundation, explains, “We believe that everyone deserves access to opportunities that can transform their lives and the lives of those around them, especially when it comes to health care. Part of our strategic plan to expand access to behavioral health care involves investing in the current and future workforce to reduce provider shortages in our region. By building pathways to high-demand jobs, including those in the health care workforce, we can empower individuals to acquire the skills and knowledge needed to succeed, which complements the work done by WSOS.”
This shared mission has fostered a strong partnership between Cambia Health Foundation and WSOS, ensuring that students in Washington State have the resources and mentorship they need to pursue careers that will make a lasting impact on their communities.
The Power of Employee Volunteerism
Cambia’s commitment to WSOS goes beyond financial support. The foundation actively encourages employee engagement through volunteering, mentoring, and scholarship application reviews. As Maguire notes, “By providing volunteers to review scholarship applications and mentor scholars, we are not only supporting the educational and career aspirations of talented students but also helping to address the critical workforce needs of our state’s health care system. Additionally, this partnership is a great example of the power of employee volunteerism, which is a key component of our culture at Cambia.”
Supporting students is not just about financial assistance—it’s about fostering a sense of belonging, encouragement, and community. “By providing opportunities for our employees to engage with and support their communities, we are not only making a positive impact on the lives of others but also fostering a culture of compassion, empathy, and social responsibility within our organization,” says Maguire.
The Impact of Mentorship
Mentorship is a key component of Cambia’s involvement with WSOS, and for employees like Saavedra Gonzales, the rewards are profound. “For me, mentorship is about seeing students grow into the best versions of themselves and witnessing the power of self-discovery. I’m just there to support them, rally them, and be their biggest cheerleader, but they do the amazing work.”
Through mentorship, students gain confidence and clarity about their future. “The most rewarding moments are when students discover their voice when they find the courage to pursue their dreams and take bold steps towards their goals. This occurs in many ways, like receiving recognition as a UW 100 Husky award, deciding to pursue graduate school, or building the confidence to ask bold questions. Or in small ways, like helping them quiet the noise around them so they can focus on their strengths and brilliance. My role is to listen, offer perspective, and be a sounding board as they grow into who they’re meant to be.”
Encouraging Others to Get Involved
For those considering becoming a WSOS mentor, Gonzales has a clear message: “If you’re considering becoming a WSOS mentor but haven’t yet, I say go for it. Sometimes, we forget that just being there can make a profound difference. This isn’t about having all the answers; it’s about showing up, listening, and being a steady source of support. Students don’t need perfection; they need people who believe in them, who can offer perspective, and who will cheer them on as they navigate their unique journeys. And in the process, you’ll find that you’re growing too, learning from their resilience, curiosity, and determination. It’s truly a partnership and one of the most rewarding experiences you can have.”
By supporting WSOS, Cambia Health Foundation is investing in the future of Washington’s workforce, ensuring that students have access to the resources, mentorship, and opportunities needed to thrive. Through volunteerism and mentorship, they are building a stronger, more equitable community, one student at a time.
