Behind the scenes with Alaska Airlines
Opportunity Scholars explore aviation engineering and tech careers

Opportunity Scholars had the chance to step inside Alaska Airlines’ impressive hangar for an exclusive tour focused on Washington STEM careers in action. From aircraft maintenance to software systems that make it all possible, Scholars got a firsthand look at how engineering and computer science power the airline industry. They also gained insight into the wide range of internship opportunities available to Washington students through Alaska Airlines.
Engineering internships that take flight
Mackenzie Hertogs from Alaska Airlines’ HR team dove deeper with Scholars, sharing details about the company’s diverse internship offerings and answering questions to help them understand the opportunities available to them. Scholars learned about real-world projects interns have worked on and how that work directly impacted airline staff and passengers. The session highlighted how Alaska Airlines supports Washington students in gaining hands-on experience that prepares them for a fruitful career right here in Washington state.
Scholars then took a tour on the hangar floor led by Line Maintenance Manager, Mike Martini, who offered a close-up view of the maintenance of aviation, including engine inspections and component repairs. They learned the who, what and why when it comes to aircraft maintenance, repairs, and flight preparation — a powerful reminder that behind every plane is a team of skilled professionals working with precision and care.
The tour also revealed how coding and data science play a critical role in aviation, which was of particular interest to Scholars pursuing computer science. Interns using software to monitor aircraft performance, optimize flight operations, and enhance safety are helping build the future of air travel, one algorithm at a time — and it was cool to see how all the finer details culminate into big impacts for all of us.
Inspiring the next generation of STEM leaders
This hangar visit wasn’t just a field trip — it was a launchpad. By connecting Scholars with industry professionals and showing them the real-world impact of STEM careers, Alaska Airlines and WSOS are helping students envision their futures in engineering and technology, while networking with leaders in the field at the same time.
