Welcome to the module on fielding job offers!

In this module, you will get familiar with the basic elements of job offers, including terminology, understanding employment forms and benefits. You’ll also learn how to negotiate a salary.

There are two parts to this module:

  • Part I: Employment terminology and hiring forms
  • Part II: Salary negotiation

Mentees: Please review both parts of the module and determine whether you’d like to complete one or both parts. For example, you may decide that you need to learn about employment terms and forms, but you already know how to negotiate a salary. Be sure to let your mentor know the parts you plan to complete ahead of your scheduled meeting.

Part I: Employment terminology and hiring forms

Goal

Feel comfortable with the language and decisions you’ll have to make when it comes to understanding the benefits offered through an employer.

Objectives

  1. Familiarize yourself with terminology as it pertains to job offers and employment
  2. Understand and complete required employment forms
  3. Understand employment benefits (ex: retirement and health benefits)

Time Commitment

Total time for part I
One hour to 90 minutes

Time required to prepare for team meeting
Mentee and mentor: 20 to 30 minutes to review handouts.

Time required for team meeting
45 minutes to an hour. This meeting can occur in person, by phone or via a video-conferencing platform.

  3. Watch the Federal W-4 How-to video by Aureus Medical Group
  4. Review the Sample Direct Deposit Form

Part II: Salary negotiation

Goal

Learn how to negotiate a salary.

Objectives

Understand all elements of a job offer, and gain confidence in learning how to negotiate the benefits and pay you seek from an employer.

Time Commitment

Total time for this module
One hour to 90 minutes.

Time required to prepare for team meeting
Mentee and mentor: 20 to 30 minutes to review the “Points to Ponder” and “Money and More” documents. Five minutes to watch the Forbes video, “Body Language that Gets the Job”

Time required for team meeting
45 minutes to an hour. This meeting can occur in person, by phone or via a video-conferencing platform.
