There are two timeframe requirements for WSOS renewal:

  • You can only receive WSOS funding at the $2,500 level for up to three years.
  • You can only receive WSOS funding for a maximum of five years.

Limit of One to Three Years at the $2,500 Level

You can receive $2,500 for one, two or three years.

  • If you applied as a high school senior, you have up to three years of funding at the $2,500 level if needed (however, we encourage you to apply for the increase as soon as you meet the criteria, even if you haven’t received three years at the $2,500 level).
  • If you applied for WSOS as a college student, we use the number of terms you completed at the time of your initial application to determine the number of years of funding at the $2,500 level.Students who were in their first year of college at the time of application will be eligible to receive funding at the $2,500 level for two years before they will be required to increase their scholarship.Students who were in their second year of college at the time of application will be eligible to receive funding at the $2,500 level for one year before they will be required to increase their scholarship.

By the time we determine that you will be going into your fourth year in college (based on your year in college at the time of application) you must:

  • Have earned at least 90 quarter credits or 60 semester credits;
  • Have been accepted into one of the eligible high-demand STEM or health care majors listed here: (Approved Majors, Alphabetically); and
  • Be enrolled at an eligible four-year college/university or a community college that offers your eligible high-demand STEM or health care major as a bachelors’ degree.

At this time, you must submit the documents required to increase your scholarship to the $5,000 level.

How will I know when I need to apply to increase my scholarship?

The summer before you will enter what we have determined to be your fourth year in college, we will notify you by email that you will be required to submit increase documentation in order to renew your scholarship for the upcoming academic year.

If we notify you that you need to provide documents to increase and renew your scholarship for the upcoming academic year but you have not yet met the criteria, your scholarship will be forfeited at that time.

Please email us at info@waopportunityscholarship.org if you have any questions about your class standing for the time frame requirement.

What if I meet the criteria before my fourth year in college?

You are encouraged to apply to increase your scholarship as soon as you meet the requirements. If you meet the requirements after one or two years of funding, you will be able to apply for the increase to the $5,000 level before you are required to.

Limit of up to 5 years of funding:

You can only receive WSOS funding for up to a maximum of five years as indicated below. Once you reach what WSOS considers to be your sixth year in college, you will not be eligible for further funding, even if you haven’t received the full year of funding at each level.

  • If selected as a high school senior, you can receive up to five years of funding.
  • If at the time of your initial application you were selected as a college student, the number of quarters or semesters you had completed at the time of application determines the number of years you will be eligible to receive funding.Students who were in their first year of college at the time of application will only be eligible to receive WSOS funding for a maximum of four years.Students who were in their second year of college at the time of application will only be eligible to receive WSOS funding for up to three years.

In addition, students who have earned over 225 quarter credits, or over 150 semester credits are not eligible for further funding.
